A New Commandment | John 13:31-38

Saint Augustine allegedly said about the gospel of John that it “is deep enough for an elephant to swim and shallow enough for a child not to drown.” When the primitive church reflected on the gospel of John the image of a rising eagle emerged. Like an eagle reaches lofty heights as it flies, so the gospel of John takes us up the heights of christology, showing us the majesty, beauty, and divinity of Christ. John leaves his readers with no doubt about why he wrote this gospel, “these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Join us at North Bay as we explore the gospel of John and you just may find that nestled in this ancient book is the hope you’ve been looking for.

History is littered with “famous last words.” When people know that their time is coming to an end, they pick their words carefully. And that heightened sense of urgency is why Jesus' so-called “Farewell Discourse” (found in John 14-17) has been a source of inspiration and devotion for Christians in every generation. With His death on the cross approaching, Jesus has the full attention of His disciples and shares with them some of His most significant teaching about who He is, why He came, and what His disciples are called to do. Biblical scholar D. A. Carson points out, “Perhaps one of the most amazing features of this ‘Farewell Discourse’ as it has come to be called, is its beginning. It is Jesus who is going to the agony of the cross; it is Jesus who is troubled in spirit. Yet on this night when of all nights it would have been appropriate for his disciples to encourage him and support him, we discover that they can see only their loss. Jesus therefore must encourage them.” (The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus, pg 17). We would love to have you join us for this 10-week mini-series within our Gospel of John series. And along the way you just may find encouragement for the things that cause you fear.
